Are you well supplied with vitamin D?
Around 50% of people in Germany are inadequately supplied with vitamin D. The body absorbs only a small amount of vitamin D through food, as only a few foods contain vitamin D in large quantities. Vitamin D is one of the few vitamins that the body can produce itself. Vitamin D is produced in the skin when exposed to sunlight. Since we can only replenish our vitamin D stores in this country in the summer months through exposure to sunlight, taking vitamin D supplements is a good way to keep the vitamin D level in the body at an optimal level. Spending most of our time indoors (e.g. when working in an office), consciously avoiding the sun (clothing, creams with sun protection factor) or taking medication can also have a negative effect on the vitamin D supply. In addition, the body's ability to produce vitamin D itself decreases with age. Since the skin of dark-skinned people is less permeable to UV light, vitamin D can only be produced if the sunlight is intense enough. In our latitudes, it is therefore difficult for people with darker skin to ensure that they have a vitamin D supply through their own production alone. This interactive questionnaire can give you an indication of whether you may not be getting enough vitamin D: http://www.d3-aktion.hevert.de/selbsttest/story.html
Signs of a vitamin D deficiency
Signs of a vitamin D deficiency include, for example, reduced muscle strength, muscle and joint pain, a weakened immune system and susceptibility to infections.
Vitamin D thieves
Anyone who takes medication on a long-term basis should keep an eye on their vitamin D levels. Taking vitamin D can improve the effect of some medications or reduce their side effects (e.g. diabetes medication, blood pressure medication, cholesterol-lowering medication, osteoporosis medication, cancer medication). Taking certain medications (e.g. stomach medication, antiepileptics, antiallergics, Parkinson's medication, cancer medication) causes vitamin D to be broken down more quickly in the body. Therefore, it is important to ensure that you have a good vitamin D supply, especially when taking these medications. Daily is better than weekly When it comes to the effect of vitamin D on the immune system, daily is better than weekly. This has to do with the paracrine mode of action of vitamin D, in which vitamin D is used directly in the cells. Depending on how the "sunshine vitamin" vitamin D is metabolized, its metabolites support either bones and muscles or the immune system. The endocrine effect via the bloodstream has a positive effect on calcium homeostasis and bone health. The paracrine effect, in which the vitamin is only activated in the cell tissue, supports the immune system. Vitamin D3 preparations only have a half-life in the body of around 24 hours. The paracrine effect is therefore only guaranteed by a daily dose, while the endocrine effect is covered by both a daily and a weekly dose. This makes daily vitamin D administration superior to weekly administration as it covers a much broader physiological spectrum of effects and supports both effects.
Safe vitamin D dosage
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has set maximum amounts for daily vitamin D intake that are considered safe: for adolescents aged 11 and over and adults this is 4000 IU of vitamin D, and for children aged 1 to 10 years 4000 IU. With a vitamin D test carried out by a doctor or pharmacist, you can determine your vitamin D level in your blood and have an individual vitamin D dosage determined.
