The Fish pepper, also known as African Fish Pepper, is a type of hot pepper with the Latin name Capsicum annuum. It is a member of the Solanaceae family, which also includes tomatoes and potatoes.
The Scoville rating for Fish pepper is around 5,000 to 30,000, which is considered moderately hot. The plant typically takes about 75 to 90 days to reach maturity and can grow up to 3 feet tall. The fruit of the Fish pepper starts out green and turns orange, then eventually red when fully ripe. The peppers are about 2-3 inches long and have a unique striped pattern, with light green and white stripes turning into orange and red stripes as the pepper matures.
Fish peppers are known for their distinct flavor, which is often described as tangy and citrusy with a hint of smokiness. This makes them popular in spicy sauces, seafood dishes, and as a substitute for Tabasco sauce.
Interestingly, Fish peppers were originally used in African-American cuisine in the Chesapeake Bay region of the United States in the 19th century. They were often used to season fish and shellfish dishes, hence the name "Fish pepper". Nowadays, Fish peppers are increasingly popular in gourmet cooking and can be found in specialty markets and farmer's markets. Additionally, Fish peppers are sometimes used for ornamental purposes because of their attractive appearance.
The leaves of the Fish pepper plant are usually a deep green color, similar to other pepper plant varieties. However, some Fish pepper plants can have leaves with a variegated or mottled appearance, with patches of white or yellow mixed in with the green. This is a natural genetic variation, and these variegated plants can add an interesting visual element to a garden or pepper patch. However, the variegated plants may produce fewer peppers than non-variegated plants, so they may not be as productive.
