Walt and Mildretta Adams obtained a homestead below Wagontown in 1931 and fenced their section of land together. They lived here part time with their three daughters, Alene, Pat and Marilyn, but the main family home was in Homedale. Over the years, the Adams enjoyed exploring the most remote and hardly accessible outreaches of the ragged Owyhees, searching out traces of its past and locating many forgotten historical sites. Mildretta, mounted on her trusty buckskin horse, Dagwood, made countless trips into he Owyhee hills retracing overgrown freight roads and faded remains of old telegraph lines, or searching out a homestead and lonely grave sites. It was from her adventuresome nature that she gained first-hand knowledge of these forgotten places of the past. Her early writings were published in various newspapers covering the valley and she was recognized as one of the leading authorities of Owyhee County history. Personal interviews with old timers and sifting through dusty archives of the Owyhee added a special added a special touch of familiarity and authenticity to her writing.
