This is nice high-quality set of 10 inch natural wood claves. It is an inexpensive instrument that should be part of any percussionists collection. It is also a valuable addition for most bands and studios enabling them to provide a unique sound and beats. We got a great deal on these and are passing the savings along. Note! These are the nicer 10 inch size and NOT the smaller 8 inch ones.
What are claves? Claves are hand percussion instruments made from cylindrical hardwood sticks. Claves are musical instruments that produce sound via the striking vibration of the instrument.
Claves provide a foundational rhythmic sound to Latin, African, Brazilian, Cubano, Rumba, and Salsa beats. Claves also have a place in American music, most notably in Latin jazz.
How do you play claves?
You can play a pair of claves by grasping one in each hand and striking one against the other. Percussion players hold one in their dominant hand like a drumstick, and the other lightly between the thumb and fingertips of the other hand. Your grip should be firm enough to hold steady but light enough to allow some degree of resonance.
Some percussion ensembles have a dedicated clave player, however many percussionists include claves as part of a larger collection of instruments.
