Seed- Armenian Yard Long Cucumber  Heirloom, Crisp & Sweet, Drought-Tolerant

Armenian Yard Long Cucumber (Cucumis melo var. flexuosus)

#### **Description:**
The Armenian Yard Long Cucumber, also known as Snake Melon or Yard-Long Melon, is a long, slender, light-green cucumber-like fruit with slight ribbing along its length. It can grow up to 36 inches (90 cm) but is typically harvested around 12-18 inches for optimal texture and flavor. The fruit has a mild, sweet flavor with crisp, juicy flesh. Unlike true cucumbers (*Cucumis sativus*), this plant belongs to the muskmelon family (*Cucumis melo*), giving it a slightly different taste and texture.

#### **Hardiness:**
- Grows best in USDA zones **4-11**, but thrives in warm climates.
- Prefers temperatures above **65°F (18°C)** for germination and **70-85°F (21-29°C)** for growth.
- Cannot tolerate frost and should be planted after all danger of frost has passed.

#### **Flower Color:**
- Produces **bright yellow, star-shaped flowers** typical of melon species.
- The flowers are either male or female, requiring pollination for fruit development.

#### **History & Interesting Facts:**
- Native to **Armenia and the Middle East**, it has been cultivated for centuries in warm climates.
- Despite being called a cucumber, it is actually a **melon variety** and is more closely related to cantaloupes.
- Its ridged, elongated form and flexible shape allow it to be curled into spirals when growing on the ground.
- Because of its thin skin, it does not require peeling, making it a convenient choice for fresh eating.
- Known for its **drought tolerance**, making it an excellent crop for arid regions.
