Album Notes
Producers: Norman Granz (tracks 1, 6-7, 10, 13, 15); Creed Taylor (tracks 2, 8-9, 12); Johnny Mandel; Helen Keane; Esmond Edwards; Betty Carter; Richard Seidel and Don Sickler. Compilation producer: Richard Seidel. Recorded between 1960 and 1991. Includes liner notes by Chris Albertson. For the non-cognoscente, winning a Grammy award might indicate a best effort from an artist in any particular year. To the performer or publicist, it's something to be promoted and proud of. Jazz listeners are not likely to care all that much, given how the music is routinely snubbed. It's nice that the Verve label made this collection of 15 selections that won Grammys, but it is not at all that indicative of any trends when the individual tracks were winners. There are three cuts of note from Ella Fitzgerald and two apiece by Stan Getz (perhaps the only real trendsetter in his day with the bossa nova craze), Bill Evans, and Count Basie. Unlikely winners, but still very deserving of acclaim, were "Lush Life" by Joe Henderson and Betty Carter's "Look What I Got!," while the anomalies are the Shirley Horn number that received top arrangement status and the string-laden version of "Just Friends" by Charlie Parker, awarded in 1992, well past the passing of Bird. Overall, this is a good collection of music, but perhaps picked for other than artistic reasons, consistent with what the overly commercialized and politically influenced Grammys have always been all about. ~ Michael G. Many of the CD's were purchased over the years from used CD stores which may have polished or buffed the CD's to look like new.  For most of them I am unable to tell which ones have been polished as they look like new to me.
