Hales Best Jumbo melons were introduced in 1924 by I. D. Hale, who found this variety being developed by a Japanese market grower in Imperial County near Brawley, CA. Hales Best Jumbo is an old, classic favorite dating from the 1920s, this ribbed melon has a heavily netted skin. Also called muskmelon. As melons go, this one is a little more drought tolerant than most, but remember that all melons are more than 90% water. Grows to about six and a half inches in diameter, this melon has thick, sweet, orange flesh with a rich, aromatic flavor. It's also high in vitamins A, B, and C.
