Roberto Enrique Clemente was a Puerto Rican professional baseball player who played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates, primarily as a right fielder. He was 2 time World Series Champion (1960 & 1971), a 12 time gold glover, a 15 time All-star, a 4 time NL Batting Leader, and the 1966 NL MVP. But above all Roberto Clemente was a dedicated Humanitarian! On September 29th, 1972, during the last game of the season Roberto had his 3,000th career hit during his last bat of the game. Three months later Roberto tragically passed in a plane crash in which he was transporting relief packages to Nicaragua.
This Roberto Clemente card was released in 1973; after his last season and was the first Topps card to mention him reaching the 3,000 hits milestone!
