Magnetite is one of the main iron ores, and is a member of the Spinel group. It is the most magnetic of all the naturally occurring minerals on Earth, and is known as a ferromagnetic. This means it is attracted to a magnet but can also be magnetized to become a permanent magnet itself. Magnetite can be found naturally magnetized, these pieces go by the name Lodestone and will attract metals. In nature they will attract small pieces of iron filings, and this was how ancient people first noticed the property of magnetism
