FRONT COVER
"NAVAJO CAMPFIRE" BY CHUCK ABBOTT. This campfire scene in Monument Valley was planned for several years but on every summer visit to the valley, skies were too cloud-filled to permit the sunset light to illuminate the mitten formation in the background. On our last trip in clear, fall weather we finally made it! Our Indian family and our interpreter-guide from Goulding s Post assembled at the rim about an hour before sunset. The fire was laid, with two 25B flash bulbs set behind rocks in front of the fire and one 3B flash set near the camera to provide some over-all illumination. 51(7 Deardorff view camera, Ektachrome film, Goerz Dogmar lens, t/io at f.22.
OPPOSITE PAGE
"QUIET MORNING" BY CHUCK ABBOTT. This was actually Thanksgiving morning at one of many artesian ponds near St. David in the San Pedro River valley. Three years ago we found this same pond carpeted with fallen leaves, which in itself made a good picture. Since then, we have returned every fall trying to get more shots with the same effect but to no avail. We have recently learned that only once in ten years have the leaves dropped directly into the pond; in all the other years the fall winds scattered them far and wide. This is one of the places where you have to keep on going back to get 'em! 5r7 Deardorff view camera, Ektachrome film, Goerz Dagor lens, i/io at f.14.
