Song Loan, or Song Lang, is a type of percussion instrument typical of the Vietnamese/Kinh people.



As a small, flat round piece of hardwood, the Song Loan/Song Lang has the smallest shape compared to other musical instruments, a round piece of wood not as large as the mouth of a bowl, 7 cm in diameter, 4 cm high, cut into pieces. The mouth is about 1/3 deep into the body to escape sound. There is a percussion rod made of thinly bent buffalo horn or highly elastic steel sheet, with a small piece of wood attached to the top of the rod to tap on its body, creating a steady sound, "Cop!" Cop!”.



Song Loan/Song Lang is originally used to keep the rhythm and not for soloing. Since amateur music appeared, Song Loan/Song Lang has had a fundamental position in the amateur and reformed orchestra. Although it is an important musical instrument, the direct personnel is not fixed. That means, each instrument in the orchestra is played by a musician, but Song Loan/Song Lang is not; Any musician can use it, but must be someone who is capable of conducting an orchestra, that is, a conductor.
