Created by Korean television producer and writer Hwang Dong-hyuk, the second season of the South Korean dystopian survival thriller series Squid Game, titled Squid Game 2, premiered on Netflix on December 26, 2024.
The season features a star-studded cast including Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Wi Ha-joon, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-wook, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-shim, and Jo Yu-ri. The story is set three years after Seong Gi-hun's victory in the Squid Game. Gi-hun abandons his plans to move to the United States and returns to the deadly competition, determined to put an end to it. He plunges back into the enigmatic survival game, initiating another perilous contest where new participants vie for a ₩45.6 billion prize. Meanwhile, Hwang Jun-ho, aided by hired mercenaries, embarks on a side mission to locate Gi-hun.
Within its first three days of release, the second season garnered 68 million views, surpassing the previous record for Netflix’s highest premiere viewership set by the first season of Wednesday, which had 50.1 million views during its premiere week. According to Netflix, the season claimed the No. 1 spot in 92 countries. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, it was generally considered to be of lesser quality than the first season. The third and final season, which was filmed simultaneously with the second, is slated for release in 2025.
