Here is a fabulous history of the University of Texas football program from its beginnings in 1893 through 1970, the final year of institutionalized segregation in the athletic department. Compiled by Lou Maysel, a sports journalist who covered the team for several decades and who also had a life-long interest in Horns football, this is an amazing reference book, let alone an incredible story.
For example there are game scores and rosters for all 77 teams along with game accounts, anecdotes, quotes, first person recollections, clippings, and many highly detailed descriptions of important games and landmarks in the program with a special emphasis on the coaching staff and its "tree." Plus, hundreds of photos that tell their own stories: Did you know that Tom Landry can smile? That Tommy Nobis never smiles? That Bobby Layne was truly beautiful? That Darrell Royal was a halfback? That Mel Renfro once "bedeviled the Horns all night long?"
And yes, it is notable that the 1969 national champion team was the last one to be an institutionally segregated team when Julius Whittier (Google him for a great unexpected story) came on board with a scholarship in 1970. Texas was the last SWC team (along with Arkansas) to integrate their football program. For perspective on this timeline, the NFL had been integrated for the most part by the late 1940's (with the Washington team being the last holdout all the way to 1960... go figure).
