is the title of the 1900 Bing and Grondahl Christmas plate, the SIXTH plate in the series – the longest running and most popular series of collector plates ever produced. It features a large Church Bell hanging in a belfry, bearing the inscription SOLI GEO GLORIA (Latin for Glory to God alone). Beyond the bell, you can see the rooftops and chimneys of a small town. The brickwork that surrounds the bell is stunning, with exceptional three-dimensional effect.
This plate was designed and sculpted by DAHL-JENSEN, a collectable artist in his right, and famous for the many animal figurines he designed for B&G, as well as his excellent designs for various B&G Christmas and commemorative plates. In 1925, Dahl-Jensen founded his own porcelain company that produced many beautiful and highly collectable figurines and other porcelain works of art.
The scene is embossed on Danish porcelain and hand painted in traditional Copenhagen blue under the glaze. Diameter just over 7 inches (18 cm). Pierced foot for hanging wire. Marked on the back with B&G’s three tower trademark, “KJOBENHAVEN (Danish for Copenhagen) – B&G – DANISH CHINA WORKS”, a mark that was last used by B&G in 1901.
Bing and Grondahl was founded in 1853. By the 1890s, it was one of the leading porcelain houses of the world, rivaling its close competitor Royal Copenhagen in artistic style and innovation. Bing and Grondahl merged with Royal Copenhagen in 1987, uniting their talents to meet changing demands and economic conditions.
FIRST QUALITY (no scratch through the trademark) and in EXCELLENT CONDITION (no chips, cracks, or repairs). The front of this plate is virtually free of the tiny black spots (cinders), brown spots (iron particles) and polish marks (where cinders were removed) that are so common on these early plates. There are a few very small brown spots on the BACK of the plate, not visible when displayed on a normal manner. All in all, this is a truly EXCELLENT example of a B&G 1900 Christmas Plate, with excellent color and contrast.
THIS IS A PHOTO OF THE ACTUAL PLATE YOU WILL RECEIVE! Many sellers use stock photos of plates that they sell . The variation in new plates is small; what you get will be VERY close to any stock photograph. But there can be HUGE variations in the early plates, and prices vary substantially from one 1900 plate to another; a premium plate should command a premium price, whereas a below average plate should sell for a below average price. I f you rely on a stock photo, you will know the design of the plate you are buying but you will not know the quality. Even when photos of the actual plate are included in a listing, sellers often fail to mention (or gloss over) manufacturing defects. But you are paying for this plate, and you want the best quality plate for the money, so be sure that you know what you are buying. If you have ANY questions about MY plate, please ask!
