About the item:

This signed History of the DC Universe hardback is limited to only 1,000 produced and is the signed and numbered limited edition (10,000 were made of the regular edition).  This copy is number 346 out of the 1,000 and came pre-signed by both Marv Wolfman and George Perez.  Best of all, is also signed by hand by an astounding 60 more comic creators that contributed to this volume and/or DC’s history from the Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age, up to the year the book was released (1988); many of them true comic legends.  The autographs were obtained over the course of several years attending various conventions.  So, in addition to being signed by Wolfman and Perez, the additional signatures include:

JM DeMatteis, Elliot S! Maggin, Mike Grell, Bob McLeod, Ron Randall, Russ Heath, Romeo Tanghal, Joe Giella, Alex Saviuk, Mike Royer, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Sergio Aragones, Mark Waid, Keith Giffen, Jose Delbo, Barbara Friedlander, Jim Starlin, Walt Simonson, Matt Wagner, Louise Simonson, Anthony Tollin, Howard Chaykin, Steve Englehart, Kevin Nowlan, Bob Chapman, Roy Thomas, Bill Sienkiewicz, Gilbert Hernandez, Jaime Hernandez, Irwin Hasen, Arthur Adams, Carmine Infantino, Alan Grant, Dan Jurgens, Bernie Wrightson, Alan Davis, Mike Mignola, Jim Steranko, Tony Isabella, Joe Kubert, Adam Kubert, Mike Barr, Paul Kupperberg, Kevin Maguire, Brian Bolland, Pat Broderick, John Beatty, Len Wein, Joe Staton, Jerry Ordway, Paul Levitz, Neal Adams, Trever Von Eden, Nick Cardy, Keith Kez, plus five more I can't identify (I started working on this around 2000).

These signatures represent a virtual who’s who of some of the biggest comics creators in the industry and all contributed to DC's long history, now over 80 years old (this book was published in 1988 (Superman's 50th anniversary). Please note- the signatures are all real- they are the actual, hand-signed signatures of the comic creators stated. They are not pre-printed images in the book.

Further, many of the above names directly contributed to this book- see the pull out poster described and pictured further below. In addition to this impressive list of autographs, the book features a Bill Sienkiewicz wrap around cover. It also includes essays that delve into the specifics of a particular character or reminiscences of artists, writers, or editors add insider insight to a volume already full of homage and tribute to the characters of DC as well as the men and women who helped bring them to life for millions of readers world-wide. Preceding each of these one-page essay is a full-color pin up. The first features Superman by Neal Adams, followed by Julius Schwartz, Superman drawn by Joe Shuster with an essay by Jerry Siegel, Batman by Dick Sprang with essay by Bob Kane, Sgt. Rock and many other DC war heroes with art and essay by Joe Kubert, Captain Marvel by Kurt Schaffenberger with essay by Roy Thomas, the Legion of Super Heroes with art by Steve Lightle and essay by Paul Levetz, Swamp Thing with art by Steve Bissette and John Totleben with essay by Len Wein, Darkseid with art by Jack Kirby & Steve Rude with essay by Jack Kirby, Aquaman with art and essay by Ramona Fradon, Wonder Woman with art by George Perez and Trina Robbins with essay by George Perez and, lastly, another Superman entry with art and essay by Frank Miller.

Next in the book is a three-page gate-fold jam poster which features DC’s most popular characters, each drawn by a single artist. Joe Kubert himself drew the layout/roughs for the piece and then individual artists each took a specific character and completed the piece. The artists who contributed to this piece are: Jim Mooney, Jim Aparo, Steve Bissette/John Totleben, Denys Cowan, P Craig Russell, Mart Nodell, Joe Staton, Dave Stevens, Bill Sienkiewicz, Jack Kirby, Mike Royer, Keith Giffen, Brett Blevins/Al Williamson, Michael Kaluta, Gene Colan, Steve Lightle, Brian Bolland, Michael T Gilbert, Jim Starlin, Joe Kubert, Art Adams, Walt Simonson, Paul Norris, Mike Grell, Mary Wilshire, Andy Kubert, Gil Kane, Kurt Schaffenberger, Bob Kane, Curt Swan, George Pérez, Howard Chaykin, Jan Duursema, Carmine Infantino, Jim Steranko, Gray Morrow, Neal Adams, Murphy Anderson, Dave Gibbons, Gilbert Hernandez, Dan Spiegle, Frank Thorne, Ramona Fradon, Matt Wagner, Ernie Colon, Irwin Hasen, Joe Orlando, Pat Broderick, Jamie Hernandez, Steve Rude, Frank McLaughlin, and Dick Giordano.

The remainder of this 128 page book is the history of the DC Universe itself, written by Marv Wolfman and illustrated by George Perez – beginning with the dawn of the multiverse through the beginning of the Golden Age of Heroes with Superman, Batman, and so on- and concluding with events through Crisis on Infinite Earths. The book itself is in excellent condition with a fair condition dust jacket (some damage, most notably a tear on the back cover but does have more lite general storage wear).  It will be shipped with the utmost care.

Scans include book both with and without dust jacket, the pages with the autographs, plus all of the essays and the trifold pullout poster (which is a stock photo- the poster was too large for my scanner so I used a stock photo).
