Batavian Broadleaf Endive (Cichorium endivia), also known as Escarole, is not part of the lettuce family although it strongly resembles lettuce. It is actually close relatives of chicory, artichoke and sunflowers. Endiva can be used in salads on its own or can substitute lettuce or spinach. This biennial is known to have a slightly bitter taste but is much milder than the Frisee type of Endiva. Leaves will be 10-12" with tight compact heads
