I grew up in a time and place thick with scads of relatives who spoke of the Turn of the Century as if it had just occurred. And I guess for them it did, since they admittedly had been born in the 19th century and personally experienced the Y1.9K turning.
Of course the idea that they were actually living in a time we now call the "Mid-Century" would not have occurred to them: their idea of modernity was indoor plumbing. So, the family farmhouse I grew up in was full of all kinds of stuff just itching to become antiques along with many things that were already over that threshold. Some of these little treasures survived but many were gleefully destroyed by the generational interlopers who couldn’t wait to get fully out of the 19th and firmly into the 20th (I'm lookin' at you, mom!). During this purging I was lucky to have salvaged some of the spoils and these were the things that eventually filled my original vintage store.
Frankly, I did not appreciate this stuff while I was growing up among it, but now it would be like gold for me! Most of it has gone on to new homes, but I always try to keep a little stockpile of goods reminiscent of the 19th century on hand. So, get your steampunk-self on and rummage your forefather’s way of life right here:
