Avalokitesvara (Chinese: Guanyin, Japanese: Kannon) is the Bodhisattva of infinite compassion and mercy, the most popular of Mahayana Buddhist deities.
He is the earthly manifestation of Amitabha, guarding the world between the departure of the historical Buddha, Gautama, and the appearance of the future Buddha, Maitreya.
Name
The name Avalokiteśvara means "lord who gazes down (at the world)". In Tibet, he is called Chenrezig, which means "one who always looks upon all beings". In China, he is known as Guanyin. In Japan, he is known as Kannon.
Forms
Avalokiteśvara is often depicted in many forms, including as a young or old person, male or female, human, god, or animal. He is usually identified by a small seated Buddha in his headdress.
Role
Avalokiteśvara is the earthly manifestation of Amitabha Buddha, and guards the world between the departure of Gautama and the appearance of Maitreya. He is also the creator of the fourth world, the living universe.
Worship
Avalokiteśvara is worshipped throughout Buddhist Asia. Worshipers chant a mantrā, which is a form of Avalokiteśvara's name, to develop compassion and achieve liberation. They also spin prayer wheels, which contain printed forms of the mantrā.
