Pan Am, Aeroflot jointly set first New York-Moscow non-stop flights NEW YORK -- Pan American World Airways and Aeroflot Soviet Airlines Thursday announced an agreement under which the two carriers will jointly offer the first non-stop commercial service between the New York and Moscow. The proposed service is scheduled to begin May 15, 1988. The agreement, subject to the approval of both governments, was signed in Moscow on Sept. 25. A spokesman for Pan Am said the two carriers would jointly operate non-stop flights between New York and Moscow using Pan Am Boeing 747 jets staffed by Pan Am cockpit and flight service crews. Aeroflot has the option of placing up to three of its flight attendants aboard the flights to serve as interpreters, Pan Am said. The development between Pan Am and Aeroflot was made possible by the bilateral aviation agreement that followed the Geneva summit in 1985. Aeroflot service to the United States was suspended by President Reagan in 1981 in retaliation for the Soviets alleged role in the crackdown in Poland. Prior to that suspension, Pan Am stopped service to Moscow for economic reasons 'totally unrelated' to Reagan's move, the Pan Am spokesman said. Pan Am resumed its one-stop service to Moscow in April 1986. Pan Am said the non-stop flight from New York to Moscow is scheduled to take 8 hours and 20 minutes, while the westbound flight, against prevailing winds, is estimated at 8 hours and 55 minutes. The non-stop flights will cut approximately 3 hours from Pan Am and Aeroflot's existing one-stop service. Under the agreement, the two carriers will each have control over half of the available passenger seats and cargo space aboard the 412-seat aircraft. Pan Am and Aeroflot will market the program separately and collect their own shares of revenues. The service will begin with three round trips per week. Pan Am said the exact fares for the non-stop service have not been determined but they would be 'similar' to existing one-stop service. The lowest round-trip fare on the existing one-stop flight between New York and Moscow is $919. The Pan Am one-stop flight requires a stop in Frankfurt before continuing on to Moscow or Leningrad. In addition to the new non-stop service, Pan Am and Aeroflot will continue to offer their separate schedules of one-stop service. Pan Am is the only U.S. carrier that serves Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union.
