This book deals mainly with aspects of that portion of the Earth's lithosphere occupied by the Hawaiian Islands, and even more specifically with the geological history of the Island of Kauai. The book is organized into four related portions. By design, only a small amount of text is provided. Many illustrations are modifications of key technical diagrams derived from the geologic literature. The captions have been simplified and expanded to enhance their impact. The first portion of the book provides an overview of the character and origin of the greater Hawaiian volcanic mountain island system, which has been produced over the past 75-80 million years as the Pacific Tectonic Plate moved over the Hawaiian Magmatic Hot Spot. A second portion deals specifically with Kauai's geologic history and aspects of the Earth's atmospheric circulation that have produced trade winds and extreme amount of rain fall at Mt. Walaleale near the center of the island. That is followed by illustrations of the several places on Kauai and an overview of the character and origin of the island's beautiful sandy beaches. The concluding remarks present various aspects of Kauai and the Hawaiian Islands in general, within a framework of the 10 orders of magnitude of geologic time.
