This antique sash is a high-quality, hand-fabricated brooch thought to date from the turn-of-the-century - Belle Epoque, Edwardian, Victorian, or perhaps early Art Nouveau era. The brooch pin back reveals a tell-tale C-clasp brooch-pin back.
The body of the oval antique brooch appears to be silver - although the exact alloy is unknown - and appears to have been hand-cut, hand-forged, and hand-engraved filgree leaf and floral swirl adornments soldered and fused to the silver plate surface -and hand-fabricated silver oval bezel-set rose-cut gems at center - and features a hand-pierced, hand filed open-work interior.
The rose-cut oval stone or amethyst glass gems - set in a handmade silver bezel setting - are thought to be rose cut amethyst glass.
The piece has a visible black silver patina in the florid details on the front and also on the back. The piece has only been polished by hand with a cloth to highlight the relief details and mantain the rich surface patina.
There are no visible markings aside from small C or double CC shaped mark right at the bend on the back buckle. This does not appear to be a maker's mark - and perhaps may be a tool mark created when the silver buckle piece was formed.
The prescence of the C clasp together with the rose cut purple oval gems - believed to be hand-cut amethyst glass - places this piece around the belle epoque / late Victorian era.
The C-clasp features a long and strong pin and the signature ācā shaped metal piece that holds the pin securely and this clasp type was used throughout the Victorian period, particularly for larger brooches, to pierce the era's thick, heavy-layered fabric. The other end was apparently hand-riveted.
The pin part of the Gilded Age brooch back has a yellowish cast and may be a heavy gauge, hand-forged and filed brass or bronze - though this cannot be confirmed.
Purple rosecut antique - possibly amethyst or purple glass - domed oval cabochon gemstones measure approximately 1/3" wide x 0.75" long x 0.25" high
Pin dimensions are approximately 2.25 inches x 3" long. Total pin weight is 1.4 ounces.
