"Boy on Stilts"

The Saturday Evening Post October 4, 1919

Two of Norman Rockwell's favorite subjects for his illustrations were boys and dogs. Perhaps he so often chose boys as a subject because he began his career as an illustrator for a boys' magazine. Some believe it's because he never lost his own boyish ways. Rockwell also understood the special relationship that exists between a boy and his dog, often depicting them together in his illustrations.

In his painting entitled Boy on Stilts, the boy is about to meet with certain disaster as a result of the natural exuberance of his playful pup. The expression on the boy's face reveals that he is losing the struggle to regain his balance and is well aware of the fate that is in store for him. All of us can empathize with the youngster, having experienced some similar mishap ourselves. The illustration is typical of how Rockwell summoned an emotional understanding relevant to all of us.

This beautifully crafted heirloom Christmas ornament enhances all of the fine detail for which Norman Rockwell was famous. The vivid colors and three-dimensional sculpting of Boy on Stilts is sure to be prized as a family heirloom for generations to come.
