On September 2, 1862, during the Dakota War, the bloody drama of the Indian Massacre was enacted in the Minnesota Valley, and although many accounts of the massacre have been written, no pen has yet been able to adequately describe or portray the awful experience endured by the defenseless settlers during those dark days

In the loss of life and sacrifice of property no India conflict in the country has never equaled this massacre

The burning, pillaging, murdering, and torturing that went on are awful to contemplate

One writer alludes to it thusly:
Am all-seeing eye looking down from above could have seen this avalanche of 30,000 human beings of all ages and in all conditions, their rear ranks maimed and bleeding, and faint from starvation and loss of blood, continually falling into the hands of inhuman savages and fierce on the trails of the white man

And angels from the realm of piece touched by human woe over such a scene, might have shed tears of blood, and passing the empyreal sphere, one might there behold the Creator to lament and draw a cloud of mourning around his Throne

After the Battle of Fort Ridgely and the Battle of New Ulm, Colonel Henry Hastings Sibley was planning to punish the Sioux and to obtain the release of the settlers they were holding captive.

While Sibley was training soldiers and attempting to organize supplies, he was reminded that the bodies of many settlers killed by the Indians still remained unburied on the battlefields.

Sibley sent out a burial party of about 170 men from Fort Ridgely on August 31, 1862.

This novel tells the human story of the brave of the brave men and loyal women who loved them

Written with compassion and knowledge in forceful narrative, this novel fills the gap in the literature of America’s pioneer wars against the Indians
