U.S. ARMY, M1902/M1912 UNDRESS COAT, OFFICER, INSPECTOR GENERAL, VINTAGE

A single breasted dark blue coat with a stand up collar fastened with two hook & eye fasteners, one at the top and another at the bottom of the collar. The collar measures approx. 1-1/2” in height. The body closes with an six button hidden placket with a hook and eye at the base. All buttons are intact. The lower side vents are fastened by a single snap closure on the right and left. The left lower side vent is missing the snap closure. There is a vertical thin white stain on the upper right shoulder sleeve.

There are two inside pockets, the inside right pocket is horizontal one (top opening), while the left is vertical (side opening). There is a hanging loop on the neck. In the inside right horizontal pocket is a makers tag which has faded and illegible due to age and use. Interior and exterior condition is good with only a few very minor moth holes (see photos).  The trim does exhibit some fraying and over time this material has had the tendency to faded to a greenish color. Sleeves are lined. Color of the wool is fine.

Insignia:

• U.S. Collar Insignia: Gilt, four loops, and sewn into the stand up collar

• Inspector General: Pin back with open loop “C” type catch. An example of this insignia can be found: “Figure 21-4, page 272, Encyclopedia of United States Army Insignia and Uniforms, by William K. Emerson”.
  

ORIGINAL Coat and Insignia. At one time during the life of this coat, it was used as movie prop. The inside of each sleeve is marked “WARNER BROS WARDROBE, 1C 1741.

NOTE: Upon arrival, we at first thought that this was a M1895 Dress Coat. Due to the collar and button configurations we feel that this is a M1902/M1912 Undress Coat.
