ALASKA NATIONAL GUARD STATE SERVICE MEDAL AND RIBBON, VINTAGE, OBSOLETE

This is an obsolete Alaska National Guard Service medal which is no longer used. Circa 1960's. This medal was awarded for Alaska National Guard Members for 10 years of service starting in December of 1963. The medal is suspended from a top bar which reads “ALASKA” and is hallmarked “Gemsco N.Y.” 

 

The Alaska National Guard State Service Medal and Ribbon honors members of the Alaska National Guard who have served for ten years. The ribbon is dark blue and is bisected by a thin green vertical stripe, which is flanked by a thin yellow vertical stripe on either side.

 

The Alaska National Guard is made up of the Alaska Army National Guard and the Alaska Air National Guard. The Army component, based in Fort Richardson, was established in 1940 and numbers approximately 2,000.
