An Empire style ormolu and malachite mantel clock by Denière
French, c.1820
Measures: Height 50cm, width 33cm, depth 14cm
Made in the early nineteenth century, not long after the First French Empire period, this excellent piece is a malachite and ormolu mounted malachite mantel clock with sculptural decoration, the movement of which is stamped for Denière and Gailleaux. Consisting of the ever-successful combination of malachite and gilt-bronze (the malachite of which is a later addition), it is made with clear Neoclassical influences, the dial (stamped for Denière and Gailleaux), is offset and mounted on one side by a leaning female figure and on the other by a small lyre at the clock's base. The case is mounted on a rectangular base, with bands of ormolu friezes to decorate.
