This book is compiled with several purposes in mind. For the old-timers, we hope, it will revive old memories; for the newcomers to Sloatsburg, it will tell the story of how and why our village came to be what it is today; and, moreover, to let it be known that Sloats-burg has a story worth telling . . . and we have done our best to do that.

As the history of Sloatsburg unfolds, it is hoped that we will cre-ate an awareness of the value and importance of written records, public or personal; of photographs and other memorabilia, and of their preservation. From those bits and pieces, the history of the village may be written . . . and a tricentennial date is only a hun-dred years away.
