Commonly known as the southern magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora features a large, upright structure that can grow up to 27 meters (88 feet) tall, with a trunk diameter of about 60 to 90 centimeters (24 to 36 inches). The tree has a dense, broad canopy, often with a pyramidal shape when young. Its glossy, dark green leaves are elliptical, measuring 12 to 20 centimeters (5 to 8 inches) long, with a leathery texture and a distinctive rusty-brown underside. In late spring to summer, southern magnolia produces large, fragrant white flowers that can reach up to 20 centimeters (8 inches) in diameter, often with a creamy yellow center, creating a striking contrast against the dark foliage.

Native to the southeastern United States, the southern magnolia thrives in warm, humid climates, preferring well-drained, slightly acidic soils and full sun to partial shade. It is moderately resistant to drought but benefits from regular watering during dry spells. Magnolia grandiflora can tolerate temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F) and shows some resilience to wind, making it suitable for a variety of landscapescaping applications. Its beautiful flowers, attractive foliage, and shade-providing canopy make it a popular choice for ornamental planting in gardens, parks, and urban landscapes.
