Classic stocknagel from Stad Gent (Ghent), Belgium, circa 1960's. This medallion features a view of the impressive 298' tall Ghent Belfry and Clock Tower surrounded by olive branches and the city's coat of arms.
Stocknagels (literally, floor or stick nail) are originally a Central European Alpine tradition and are rarely found in other parts of the world. Hikers would collect these medallions as mementos of a particular hiking route and nail them to their staff, or walking stick, for bragging rights. Flexible silver colored pressed tin with a beautiful patina. About 2" tall with two pre-drilled holes for attaching to your walking staff.
Sometimes older is better.... well, let's make that almost always older is better. Oh nuts, let's just admit it: OLDER IS BETTER and that is why you are here, right? Who wouldn't prefer a 50 year old bottle of linseed oil to one off the shelf brand-spanking-new? Or,a box of partially used colored chalks from the 1940's? That is because you know that "they just don't make 'em like that anymore" is a great way to shop for things that are important to you and your process. There is a reason people snap up sewing machine needles made in the 60's and 70's while disdaining newer ones. It is as simple as this: Where were they made, Germany or China? And, so it goes for all kinds of stuff you crafters, artists, and creators love to work with. OLDER IS BETTER!
