The courting candle was an adjustable timer used when a suitor came to call on a father's daughter. If the suitor was liked the candle would be set high on the spiral wooden peg. If the suitor was not liked the candle would be set low. Once the candle had burnt down to the top of the first ring the date was over and the suitor left.
