Sand Dollars are a species of flat, burrowing sea urchins belonging to the order Clypeasteroida. They have a fractal-like structure featuring a radial five-fold symmetric pattern. I've picked them up all my life, but never really knew anything about their life cycle or habitat. After a good session on Wikipedia this morning, now I do, and they are fascinating to say the least. How did they get their generic name? "Dead sand dollars are sometimes said to represent coins lost by mermaids or the people of Atlantis. Some Christian missionaries found symbolism in the radial pattern and dove-shaped internal structures, comparing the holes with the crucifixion wounds of Christ and other features with the Star of Bethlehem, an Easter lily, a poinsettia, and doves." But I digress...
When we started Portland Pandemonium we needed things to fill up our store so we simply walked around our yard and garden and started "picking" stuff right where we lived! We had big collections of outdoor items including bird houses, thermometers, metal signs, gee-gaws, tin containers, old garden tools, and a ton of decorative items here and there and everywhere around the place and it was these objects that helped make up our initial shop's inventory. Plus, this turned out to be the beginning of our age-related "downsizing" soon to come!
Today this kind of yard & garden stuff continues to be a staple for us and we are always looking for things that might find their best use by being stuck somewhere in a yard or garden. And, of course, the odder and quirkier the better. So, come take a little stroll around our garden with us, but be sure to keep both your eyes and your mind open!
