This impressive and heavy industrial Iron Chamber stick was designed by Hugo Berger for Goberg around 1910 in Germany.
The handsome, handmade chamber stick comprises of the central column with attached riveted handle, and a matchbox holder to the side. It is decorated with beaten patterns to the base and column, and has ''GOBERG'' impressed into the base. It stands approximately 7” high and is 5.5” wide across the base and is very much in keeping with the arts and crafts movement and design.
The chamber stick is untouched - cleaned but not polished so that the buyer may decide how they prefer it, and is currently displayed with its ''used'' patina.
In 1895 Hugo Berger (Goberg) started in Schmalkalden Germany his first metal factory, were decorative ironwork was manufactured in a traditional way. Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide ranging variety of candlesticks and smoking accessories. Typical of Goberg's work are the use of materials such as iron and brass. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time period. Jugendstil was the German component of the Arts and Crafts movement that was so popular worldwide. Much of his work was sold at Liberty of London with pieces finding its way to the U.S. Marked Goberg on the bottom.
