Description
This is a wonderful s grouping of photographs from the estate of Helen Palmer daughter of Senator AJ Palmer (Abraham John Palmer). The largest photograph ( 12 x 15) is a stunning class portrait showing Miss Palmer and her fellow Mt. Vernon Seminary (Washington D.C.) classmates on graduation day in 1899.
The second unmounted albumen photograph ( 7 ½ x 9 ½) shows Mrs. Palmer Andrus in later years with her children in a time of leisure. On the verso of this photograph are photo copies of court ruling concerning the death of her husband William L. Andrus in 1922 and compensation request by Mrs. Andrus towards the lavish financial care of their children. The court rewarded her $10,000 per child which was an incredible sum for 1922.
Another interesting note is that AJ Palmer is noted as being the youngest soldier that served in the Civil War and later a New York Senator and a member of Teddy Roosevelt’s Progressive Party.
I do have n ambrotype of AJ Palmer in his Civil War uniform in my personal collection that came with this grouping including his Kepi. He appears to be about 14 years of age.
Condition Report: Good throughout. Albumen photo of Mrs. Palmer Andrus has archival tape repair on verso.
