Description

Two page letter to Dr. H.A.Wilcox of Aiken,South Carolina from Mrs. Harvey Wyman concerning debt owed to the good doctor. (December 17th 1877)

Writer (Mrs. Harvey Wyman) states that she was surprised that her husband's  dept had been turned over to a lawyer by Dr. Wilcox for collection. And that her husband knew no other way to pay him, and if the doctor came to their house to collect... it would be at his risk of (physical harm).

In addition Mrs. Wyman pleads they need more of those “drops “which prevents Mr. Wyman from twitching. Mrs. Wyman states her husband rode up to see the doctor after he received his first notice on the dept. from the attorney… but you were not home and left two dollars at his door”.

The letter in essence is a plea for the good doctor to forgive the dept and continue to issue them medicine despite no intention by Mr. & Mrs. Wyman of paying for it. It is interesting that she warns the doctor of personally collecting the money while pleading for more medication.

I would assume the end story after this letter likely did not end well and that Dr. Wilcox saved this letter for that reason.
