Photographs by Marc Gaede

DEEP IN THE HEART of western American Indian country, where the states of Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico come together, are towns made distinct through their intensity and violence. These Bordertowns are situated on the periphery of the largest concentration of Indian lands in the United States. Most of these reservations prohibit the sale of alcohol within their boundaries. Residents who want to drink must go to the sur-rounding communities. "The fact most Indians have neither shelter nor money for rooms makes the display of binge drinking visible to everyone Marc Gaede's photographs are a testimony of the pain, violence and tragedy that occur within these towns. The images are intended to show a problem and a reality, fulfilling that purpose with force and sensitivity. It is hoped these photographs will stir a sympathetic response to this authentic portrait of an American tragedy. Size: 8.5" x 10"
