Hiroshige's last and longest series of pictures came out with great rapidity in the last years of the artist's life, when he had reached a new peak of popularity. Doubtless, with increasing age, Hiroshige pondered on the uncertainty of his remaining years and exerted himself to the limit to record on paper as much of his beloved city as possible. He died during production of the group, which, including some works by his pupil, runs to a total of 119 prints.
