Weber, founder of Stockton, led an intriguing and adventurous life from his arrival in America from Germany in 1836 until his death forty-five years later in the adopted land he played a part in developing. At least three excellent monographs have been written previously about Weber, but each is selective. Historian George P. Hammond has written two books, one in 1966 with Dale Morgan emphasizing the Weber material in The Bancroft Library at the University of California; the other in 1982 relating to the Weber Era in Stockton. Both were issued in limited editions for The Friends of The Bancroft Library. Ilka Hartmann, in a 1979 publica-tion, stressed Weber's life as a youth in Germany. In contrast, Shebl's biography covers all aspects of the pioneer's life from his birth to his death and is written for the general public. Carefully documented, it will long remain the standard life of this famed Californian. While the names of many formerly well known California pioneers have now been virtually forgotten, that of Weber continues to be well remembered, in large part because of his development of Stockton.
