Tales of Towpath Adventures Along Lehigh & Delaware Dennis Scholl *** Very Hard to Find
We used this for our homeschool program when my daughter was younger. It is from 2009 and is a great History Story book for kids. Adults will enjoy the stories in this book as well
It is a fictional story based on the local history.
Finn Gorman, the young son of Fergus Gorman and his wife Mary. They emigrate to the US in 1846 to find a better life. It is a story of a family struggling to prosper in a new country during the dawn of the Industrial Revolution in the US. The young, inquisitive boy is a lot like Tom Sawyer -growing up on the Lehigh and Delaware Canals.
This is also a textbook like book, usually used for 4th grade. All elementary schools in the Bethlehem Pa are use it for their 4th grade history text. It is used in many other school districts in NE Pa, Eastern Pa and Western New Jersey.
Though this was written for children to understand, many adults will love reading it. I enjoyed this story while learning about the history of the canals and surrounding areas.
This retails for $100 right now on amazon - it is so hard to find.
