We've done all we can do with this vintage model 42M automatic turntable, but despite a complete teardown, degreasing and re-lubrication, it does not perform to our standards, so it is off to parts or repair-land. Perhaps you'll have better luck. Original idler and motor mounts conditioned with Rubber Renue; idler does have decent torque.
WHAT WE KNOW:
1: Cartridge is not correct V-15 AT-1
2: Lead-out pick-up is sketchy but will likely clear up after #3
3: Tonearm has too much drag. We cannot explain it. Did this before the re-build, and still thereafter; perhaps clears up with the right cartridge?
3: Lifter assembly needs replaced
4: Speed change is "iffy" at best while in motion.
Garrard was famous for over-engineering resulting in constant "care and feeding". If you get one to operate nominally, they are solid performers.
