Description: The Poblano (Capsicum annuum) is a mild chili pepper originating from Puebla, Mexico. Known as ancho or chile ancho when dried, it features a thick-walled, mildly hot fruit with a rich, mellow flavor. This beloved pepper is perfect for stuffed dishes, especially chiles rellenos. When traditionally ripened to red and dried, it becomes an ‘Ancho’; used fresh and green, it is called a ‘Poblano’. With continuous production through the summer in warm climates, this large plant requires ample space—plant at least 3 to 4 feet apart. Scoville heat rating: 1,000 to 2,000 (mild).
Growing Instructions:
-
Sowing Seeds:
- Start seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost date.
- Sow several seeds 1/4 inch deep in peat pots filled with lightly moistened seed starting mix.
-
Germination:
- Water well and place pots in a warm, well-lit area.
- Ideal soil temperature for germination is 80-85°F. A heating mat can help maintain warmth.
- Avoid overwatering; keep the soil damp but not soggy to prevent damping off.
-
Thinning Seedlings:
- Once seedlings reach 2 inches tall, thin to one plant per pot by cutting out the smaller ones.
-
Transplanting:
- When plants are 5 inches tall and nighttime temperatures are above 60°F, harden them off by gradually acclimating to outdoor conditions.
- Transplant into the garden, ensuring they have sufficient space from other plants (3-4 feet apart).
