1960's Los Angeles Street Maps East L.A. Interchange: The Rape of Boyle Heights

Two classic Los Angeles street maps from the early 1960's, one Chevron, one Texaco, both nearly identical, but for the progress being made on the Interstate Freeway system from one to the other. Each map shows multiple freeway sections both under construction and truncated here and there. Both also show the infamous East LA Interchange as completed, but with hardly anywhere to go. At the time of its construction in the early 1960s, this interchange was considered a civil engineering marvel. Located along the east bank of the Los Angeles River in the Los Angeles district of Boyle Heights it comprises 135 acres in size and is three times larger than the average highway system interchange, expanding to 27 lanes in width at some points.

Both maps clearly illustrate the purposeful bi-section and rape of the Boyle Heights neighborhood which was destroyed by political and monied fiat for the "betterment of all." Clear The Slums! It's Good For Them! We'll Relocate Them to Better Ghettos! Drive Time Will Be Cut Down For Them! Of course the East LA Interchange has become a strong symbol of the folly of pouring more concrete as a solution to traffic congestion as it yielded unintended consequences that not only exacerbated the original problems, but created many more in kind. Today the interchange handles around 1.7 million vehicles daily and has produced one of the most traffic congested regions in the world as well as one of the most concentrated pockets of air pollution in America.

CHEVRON MAP: Very early 1960's. Very good vintage condition.  Some marking and some small splits in seams, but great color and detail. TEXACO MAP: Dated 1963, slightly extended freeways compared to the Chevron map.  Excellent condition, some marking and very slight seam splits.
