When a receiver is THX® Select certified by Lucasfilm Ltd., you can count on superior performance. To qualify, a receiver's digital processing must include specific enhancements (Timbre Matching™, Decorrelation™, Re-EQ™, etc.) which ensure accurate reproduction of the movie theater experience in the home. Also, its built-in amplifiers must meet super-strict guidelines for sound purity and power output — no surprise here considering Onkyo's Wide Range Amplifier Technology and high-current, low-impedance amp design.

In addition to Dolby® Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic™ decoding, the TX-DS787 features THX Surround EX; you get home theater's standard 5.1 channels plus an additional "back surround" channel. You can either use the receiver's built-in 6-channel power (100 watts x 6!) and add one back surround speaker for "6.1" sound, or connect a separate 2-channel amp and a pair of back surround speakers for "7.1" sound.

As for flexibility, the list of features goes on and on: component video switching (2 inputs, 1 output); 4 assignable digital inputs plus an optical digital output; 5 S-video inputs; a 7.1-channel input and output; 26 DSP modes; an on-screen display for easier remote operation (requires TV with direct video input); no-compromise Onkyo construction; and a backlit LCD remote control with learning capability (it can learn the codes from your other remotes) and macro capability (it lets you program up to 16 operations for execution with the touch of a single button). Dual-room/dual-source stereo speaker outputs let you connect a pair of speakers and independently select (analog) music sources for playback in a remote location.
