Lifetime by Lucky Peterson (CD, Mar-1996, Verve).  This is the eleventh album by the master of the B-3 Hammond organ and blues guitar; and he was looking for a full and funky sound throughout. To bring in the funk he employed Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell from Parliament-Funkadelic. Enough said? Highlights include: great version of Earth, Wind, and Fire’s Shining Star--a truly fine version of the classic tune, with incredibly burning guitar work that surpasses the original, if that seems possible; a great version of the Sting song We’ll Be Together Tonight (from …Nothing Like the Sun); the smooth, jazzy Ecstasy; the politics of I Ain’t Buyin’and last but not least: a truly beautiful version of Sam Cooke’s Change Is Gonna Come, which, by itself, is far beyond the price of the cd. Peterson’s organ mastery is sublime alone, but alongside his guitar work is truly astounding. This music is for any and all “rubber fans and funkateers.”
