PEGU was a cargo/passenger of 3661 gross tons, length 372ft x beam 45.1ft and clipper bows with one funnel, two masts and a single screw, giving her a speed of 12 knots. She had accommodation for 42 1st and 20 2nd class passengers and was built in 1889 by Wm. Denny & Bros, Dumbarton for the British & Burmese Steam Navigation Co. (P. Henderson & Co.), Glasgow, who used her on the UK - Burma service. In 1896, Pegu was sold to Cia. Trasatlantica, Barcelona, converted to a troopship, renamed ALICANTE and used on the Spain - Mexico service. In 1911 she was sold to the Trinidad Shipping Co., but in 1916 she was repurchased by Trasatlantica for their Barcelona - Cadiz - New York route. In 1938, Alicante was sunk by Nationalist bombing at Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War.
