This is a set of 4 hand crafted wood and natural bark Rustic Ware or Folk Art Old Fashioned Kitchen Items. These were souvenirs from Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina. Grandfather Mountain is one of the highest peaks in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Craft-making is a major part of the mountain culture and these always reminded my parents of their trip to the mountains. You can see the words in red on the sides of three of the pieces.  This set was obviously created by a skilled craftsman as you can see by the details in the enlarged photographs. They are a little bigger than what would be considered miniature or doll house items, which is why I am calling them mini.  All have the natural timber or wood color to them, I don’t know the type of wood, but it is a lovely golden color with lovely grain showing and a darker brown bark or wood knot section on the sides of all the pieces. I will describe each item below and give the measurements.

  1. A miniature butter churn. The churn measures approximately 5 inches tall to the top of the churn plunger or handle. The barrel section is just over 3 inches tall. The base diameter is 1 ¾ inches. It is created with three separate pieces. The top and the plunger are removable and the plunger moves up and down easily. (See picture with the top removed). The brown bark section is on both sides of the churn. It is marked in red with Grandfather Mtn N.C., but it is hard to read. It is in excellent vintage condition with no chips or cracks.
  2. A miniature three legged cauldron or hanging pot. The pot is just over 2 inches tall and has a top diameter of just less than 2 inches. It has a metal handle for hanging. It is not marked with the red lettering, but is obviously part of the set. The brown bark goes almost around the entire pot. The handle appears to be copper with some light tarnishing, normal for the age. It is in excellent condition, no chips or cracks.
  3. A miniature pitcher with handle. It stands approximately 1 ¾ inches tall and 1 ¾ inches wide (including the handle). It has Grandfather Mtn. N.C. written on the side in red. It is in excellent vintage condition, no chips or cracks.
  4. A miniature jug with cork stopper and handle. It stands approximately 2 ¼ inches tall from the bottom to the top of the cork. It is close to 2 inches wide including the handle. It is marked Grandfather Mtn. N.C. in the red on the side. This has two stress cracks (see photos) on the sides, most likely from age or climate. The cracks are very fine and you don’t really notice them unless you look for them, but you can see where they are under magnification. The cork is intact and other than the cracks the jug is in great condition.

These beautifully handcrafted little folk art pieces would be the perfect addition to enhance any farm house or cabin décor. Great to display on a shelf or in a shadow box for a country kitchen.
