Who doesn't love loons? The eerie "laugh" heard, the magnificent display, the lumbering takeoff for flight and the fluffy chicks riding piggyback on their parents are images ingrained in popular culture. Combining their years as naturalists and educators, Crowley and Link introduce you to the real bird behind the images. A scientifically accurate yet comfortably readable text--including legends and stories about loons--accompanied by spectacular photography, shows the loon's relationship to its family, its environment, other animals, and humans. A list of loon organizations, extensive bibliography, and index make this a valuable resource tool.

I'm a backyard birdwatcher who tries to identify the avian species that show up at our feeders (everything from wild turkeys to ruby-throated humming birds.) One of the highlights of our Northern Spring is the return of the Common Loon to the river out back. I learned from this book that loons don't actually nest on rivers--they prefer lakes--so our visitors must be looking for something to eat. This book is a fascinating natural history of this primitive avian species, written by authors who have experienced these birds in the wild, and who (according to the book's 'Forward') have learned to love them. "Love of Loons" contains beautiful photographs of all of America's loon species, but the majority of them feature the Common Loon, a handsome black and white water bird with a distinctive red eye. Some of the pictures show baby loons riding on their parent's back. It's not a good idea to be the last baby loon to hatch. Usually loons raise only one or two chicks, and sibling rivalry is intense. Adult loons will actually kill the young of duck species that attempt to share a lake with them. However, they are very protective of their own young and will even attack humans who venture too close to their nest. One of the photographs in "Love of Loons" shows a loon with a broken beak. The photographer, Peter Roberts "once observed a loon and a beaver in a violent confrontation. A broken beak would not be a surprising result." "Loon Aggression" might be the most sobering chapter in this book, but the first chapter, "Call it Arsefoot" is the funniest. The authors delve into the origins of the word 'loon' and suggest the name in the chapter title as more appropriate, as the loon's legs are placed far to the rear on its body. "The Cree called the loon 'Mookwa,' the spirit of the North." If you've ever heard the cry of one of these Northern divers, I think you will agree with the Cree.
