The Real Don Steele 1963-64 KISN 910 Fractious Friday Fabulous Fifty Hit Parades, Tina Delgato, Good Guys, Boss Radio: KISN radio, 910 on your AM dial, was Portland's preeminent rock and roll station in the '60's. Of course the music was great, but what made things even better was the superlative deejays who spun the platters and spewed their patter in a freewheeling way that made you feel like you mattered. In fact, you became part of the communal vibrating wave lengths broadcasting from the fish bowl they occupied at the intersection of 10th and West Burnside ("KISN Corner"). KISN had great jocks including Tiger Tom Murphy, Pat Pattee, Roger Hart, Ken Chase, Roger W. Morgan (all of them), Paul Oscar Anderson, Addie Bobkins, Peter Huntington May, Dick Saint, Frank Benny, and so forth, and so on.... But the one jock who undeniably stood out from all the rest was The Real Don Steele who spent one glowing, exotic, manic, year at KISN from mid-1963 to mid-1964 before he went south and helped kick-start Boss Radio in "Boss Angeles" at KHJ. But, before he left, RDS ruled Portland's airwaves during drive time. He also declared his candidacy for president as the "Cooler Ruler," took over the Steel Bridge (a main east/west bridge in PDX), and then declared himself Emperor of North America, created the month of "Donald" which he inserted mid-summer, and refined his Fractious Friday patter to a fine scattered point. And yes, Tina Delgato was alive and kicking everyday. There was nothing like him and it is no wonder he is still venerated as one of the very best of all jocks to ever put on headphones and open a mic.
From Wiki: "Steele was never one to analyze the evolution of rock radio. In a 1995 interview, he insisted, "Look, you take the Motown sound and the British Invasion and you throw in Elvis and Roy Orbison, and you have a music mix that's hard to beat at any time or any place." Yes the music was great, but there is no doubt that the jocks were the straws that stirred rock's drink and RDS was a super-big-gulp!
I am offering my personal collection of KISN's Fabulous Fifty Hit Parades from that special time when RDS ruled from Portland, as Emperor, covering a span from July 1963 to August 1964. It was the beginning of the British Invasion but indeed Motown and Elvis and Roy were still alive and kicking it and the Summer of Love was right around the corner!

These are all in pretty good condition, and some are excellent. However, there is some dog-earing, pin holes, little tears, fading, and the occasional mark here and there on some of them. See the photos. All from my personal collection and I have saved them for 60 years for a moment just like this, just for you. Great birthday gift for that Boomer in your life! Please note, I have four other batches of KISN Fab Fifty's, both pre and post RDS, covering 1962, 1963, and 1965 in my 60's Shop Section.

I entered College in 1965 and it doesn't get any more "Sixties" than that. As today is the era of technology and instant connection, the 60's were an era of social consciousness and mind expansion. Interestingly, when asked which era people would like to relive the 60's Summer of Love is the most popular destination. But, it's not coming back, and it doesn't have to, because it already thoroughly informs and drives the culture we live in today! So, just remember the next time you are tempted to say "Okay, Boomer..." to someone who looks old that the 60's were our gift to all you wanna-be hippies and hipsters out there! And, if you'd like some relics and artifacts from that very busy decade you will always find some right here at Portland Pandemonium's The 60's Were Groovy Shop:
