From surrealist Jan Svankmajer ('Alice') the film combines mostly live action with short bumpers or breaks of his trademark stop-motion animation in between the plot.

With its desaturated color, cold settings, dilapidated furniture and buildings, its hard to peg down the time frame, but suffice to say its modern times.

Jean Berlot is a deeply troubled man haunted by premonitions of being stuffed into a straight-jacket since the death of his mother in a mental institution. While arranging her funeral, he meets a man who claims to be the Marquis de Sade, replete in 18th century garb as if he was a time traveller. The Marquis offers Jean a place to stay since he was kicked out of his Hotel for his tantrum-like nightmares.

That night he awakens to the sound of revelry and voyeuristically observes a decadent orgie. The following morning Jean denounces the blasphemy of the Marquis and the two have a debate about God. Before Jean can leave the Marquis chokes to death on a banana and he is forced at gunpoint by the servant to help bury him in the mausoleum.

The following morning, Jean and the servant are awakened by a bell and after opening the crypt, the Marquis appears and announces it was all an elaborate prank. His mother had died by being buried alive and he finds it theraputic to revisit this childhood memory. He suggests that Jean do the same:

Voluntarily commit himself to an asylum managed by his friend, Dr. Murloppe, who offers "Purgative Therapy" for people who are not mad but could be in the future...

Described in the introduction by Svankmajer himself as a "philosophical horror film", LUNACY is based loosely on two short stories by Edgar Allan Poe and inspired by the works of the Marquis de Sade.
