Black Mustard Seeds – 3,000 Heirloom Non-GMO Seeds

Brassica nigra, commonly known as black mustard, is an annual plant celebrated for its dark-brown to black seeds, which are a staple in various spice blends. Originating from tropical North Africa, temperate Europe, and parts of Asia, black mustard has a rich history of use.

Dating back over 2,000 years, black mustard was utilized as a condiment by ancient cultures. The Roman author Columella referenced its use in the 1st century A.D., and its leaves were pickled in vinegar. By the 13th century in France, the seeds were ground and mixed with partially fermented grape juice to produce "moût-ardent," a precursor to modern mustard, known today as "moutarde."

Historically valued for both its medicinal and culinary applications, black mustard seeds add a complex, pleasant flavor to spice blends. They are a key ingredient in Dijon mustard and whole seed deli mustards, bringing depth and zest to various dishes.
