As one who has been on a lifelong quest for discovery and involvement in these subjects—Ralph Cates came up with some brazen answers. The result is his book, The Renaissance of Hope: Creating the Green New Deal.
Cates has been an obsessive analyst of human history, science, political-economics, government and social interactions between peoples since a young age. That view molded him working as a union electrician, professor and electrical engineer over 44 years. During that time, he worked around the world on almost every conceivable kind of project. Examples are a giant early-warning system radar in Kwajalein, in the mid-Pacific, a copper mine in Iran and oil and gas facilities in Dubai, Saudi Arabia and India. American projects such as a water treatment facility at Lake Mead and Hoover Dam, several waste-water treatment developments, green energy generation, local government facilities, multiple telephone company projects, hospitals, nuclear power plants, high-rise buildings, universities, shopping centers, a newspaper press, naval and marine military bases, an aircraft manufacturing company, and an iron mine helped broadened his experiences. In the military, he fixed radios and radars.
Working closely with numerous nationalities gave him an insight into the possibility of a benevolent world. Koreans, Iranians, Filipinos, Arabs, Africans, Indians, Japanese, Pakistanis, French, Dutch, Swedes, British, South Africans, Canadians, Chinese and a few Russians—all of these employees or administrators—made him realize how little actual difference there is between peoples. He realized that what everyone in the world wants—really wants—is peace between people, adequate food and potable water and a benevolent, long-lasting world environment. They, especially our youth, want constructive employment that addresses prevailing problems, advances knowledge and civilization, and provides descent living standards and health without further destroying the world's environment.
Because of these experiences, and as one who also has a close relationship with several of the younger generation, he has a unique view of what they are facing. He realizes there is a thirst for knowledge, answers and solutions from these youth.
He was interested in historical economics, not the mathematical version. He wanted to understand what it did to people, countries, social divisions, and especially the environments of the world. He wanted to know if growth was good? Who benefited? Who paid the price? And at what cost?
One of renowned psychoanalyst, Erich Fromm's books: The Revolution of Hope, gave Cates the idea for this book. It encouraged him to consider what might save us now, with the world near the tipping point of the global climate crisis, which has also caused the major political crises.
